"Not For The Faint Of Heart"
That is how Tonia described this journal. "It's too long," she continued. Brand followed up by saying, "It's too hard to read." I guess I'm not the greatest writer. But it's OK, because the people who read this journal seem to be able to understand what I'm trying to say.

I went on vacation with my family from Fort Worth. They drove over to Greenville, picking me up on July 2nd. I gave them a campus tour. We camped that night in an RV park outside of Spartanburg. Then we drove up to Norfolk, Virginia, to camp by the beach. The kids enjoyed the beach, and we made a sand castle only to have Angelo later stamp it to smithereens. The next day, July 4th, we drove up to Washington DC, set up camp, and went to see the fireworks about the Washington Monument. They were very spectacular. But it rained, and the tents got soaked on the outside and leaky on the inside.

We stayed in DC for two more full days, and I saw parts of the Air and Space Museum and the Natural History Museum, walked through the Botanical Gardens and the National Cathedral (amazing!), and dodged in the National Archives. I was not able to get in touch with my fellow art student Rebecca who is doing an internship at the Smithsonian. That was too bad. After those two days of sightseeing, we drove out of DC, stopping on the way to see the Lincoln Memorial and the Vietnam Memorial.

We drove the rest of the day and stayed in a hotel for the night. The next morning we had made it to Columbus, Ohio, where we ate brunch with my Uncle Alex. In the evening we met up with Uncle Nick and Grandfather, ate pizza, and set up camp in Missouri. We stayed one full day in Missouri, and I sat around and read, took walks, and went on a cave tour with the family. The family went swimming in the river and a large snake made across the river just as they were getting out (I was reading on the shore). It was black with a white belly. My guess is that it was a Black Rat Snake. It was around 4 feet long.

The next day (Thursday) we drove off towards Fort Worth. I got dropped off at the Greyhound station in Springfield, Missouri at 2:00 PM and ended up waiting 13 hours for a bus (10 hours plus 3 more because I didn't get on the bus I needed to, it was full). I waited 6 hours for a connection in St. Louis, but after that things went smoothly through Nashville and Atlanta. I got James Lanier to pick me up from the bus station on Saturday morning. I was almost unbelievably dirty and greasy, but after I took a shower and scrounged up some clean clothes I felt much better.

Now I am back, and ready to continue with my exciting biology project. One more thing about the trip: I read nearly all of Watership Down to my younger siblings while we were on the road. It was Vincent's summer reading and he was having trouble getting into it. I hope my reading it to him and Brand made it more interesting. I certainly like the book a lot.

Thanks in particular for reading Watership Down. The pleasure of reading stories aloud has been less prevalent in recent years, and you brought back memories of my grandfather, who read aloud and taped Watership Down for me back when I was Jo's age. It is just about my most treasured memory of my Grandfather. And we weren't even in the same state!

Love Mom
